Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a national IRS-sponsored program that provides free preparation of federal and state tax returns for households with income less than $60,000.
VITA volunteers help complete and file tax returns for those who can’t afford professional tax preparation services.
Roles Available
Greeter, and Tax Preparer.
NOTE that these positions require training, but it is free and UWYC will provide all necessary materials.
- Greeter – Do you like talking with and organizing people and processes? We need volunteers who are a friendly face and help keep things moving. No tax knowledge required or expected! You will screen taxpayers to determine the type of assistance they need and confirm they have the necessary documents to complete their tax returns. Tax law certifications is not required for this position but training on office procedure is required.
- Tax Preparer – Do you like details, numbers, talking with people, and problem solving? Become a volunteer tax preparer with VITA! We provide training to get you ready to prepare taxes (no financial background required) for community members. You prepare taxes on behalf of clients with a team at the site. Must complete and successfully certify in tax law training, including the use of electronic filing software, to provide free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayaers. A training in January will be provided along with a training booklet for all tax preparers so they can study. Those with tax prep experience will not need as much training.
During the tax season, greeters and the tax preparers can select volunteering time slots of 2 or 4 hours per shift for the 13-week tax season. We are needing 4-6 volunteer preparers and 1 greeter per shift. Time slots are available Monday and Wednesday from 12-4, Tuesday and Thursday from 3-7 and, and on Saturday from 9 am - 1 pm.
